Agreed. I've done just about everything I can do eliminate this and some how it's still getting through. I'm running out of options. I've contacted the host, I've set securities, I've made it more intuitive to register....

I'll keep looking. We may have to lock this version and start a clean install.

You are banning the IP of the spammer, and they continue to register in another IP address?

If so, someone is coming in the back door of the site. IMO, then its a problem with the security of the message board software.

I went through for a long time and banned each individual IP address but after awhile it became too much. My thought is that somehow the existing database was compromised over the past few years and hasn't recovered. That is why I'm thinking a fresh install with a new database is the only fix.

It also appears to only affect certain users. I for one have never gotten any spam from this site. I'm not sure why but maybe only some of the users have been targeted.

That tells me that the spammer is a knowlegable person(s). They don't target the administrator since that would cause immediate problems for them.

IMO, the IP addresses have to be from a foriegn country? They are just advertising stupid products.

I suggest upgrading to the vBulletin Version 4.0. It's security is better.

Have you tried the vBulletin forums for help? Their tech guys hang around this site for help with security problems.

We seemed to have issues with this before our last upgrade but if they've finally figured it out I will upgrade again.
